An RSS feed is an XML file. XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. It is a way to describe and carry data as opposed to HTML which is a language used to present data.

An XML file consists of a series of heirachical "tags" which identify each element of data. An RSS XML file is comprised of a standard set of tags which allows other software (such as newsreaders or other web sites) to pick up and 'consume' any compliant RSS feed in a like-for-like manner.
